Today, I must deliver a presentation on how to make/do something while speaking in Japanese for my 3rd year Japanese class. I chose "how to draw the profile of a face" (in Japanese: 横顔の描き方). Because of time constraints, I am limited to only teaching how to draw the male face (since, in my opinion, it is much easier to teach due to its much more geometric and rigid features). I created a worksheet, that I will pass out to my "students" prior to the presentation, that will allow them to not only see examples and use the skull as a reference for proportion but will also be able to draw on top of the pre-made shape of a face at the bottom of the page. I am a bit nervous, for two reasons: first being that I may end up going over the time constraint, and second being that I hope I do not mess up my "quick" drawing during the tutorial on the chalkboard by either getting the proportions incorrect (due to the chalkboard's much larger size than the conventional medium on which I draw) or some freak malfunction like having no chalk or only broken chalk in the room! I hope everything works out!

That Sudden Urge To Paint...

Quick Study
Sadly, I have not had enough time in the past week to do any painting, but, I wanted to keep my hands working, so I did a few studies.

Today's Sketches
These are a few sketches I made today, nothing of any significance or brilliance, but merely attempts to keep my fingers nimble. The last picture is just a bunch of doodles I did during a history lecture (I thought I'd include it with the bunch). Some may notice that I'm trying to venture into the world of pencil rendering, and I've learned rather quickly that it is a "long and winding road", but I am hoping to learn a great deal throughout my journey. I am also playing around with stroke qualities. My lack of confidence in my lines have always been a pet peeve of mine after I noticed the problem, and now I am trying to figure out what it even means to be confident in my stroke. So, we'll see where that takes me. (Oh, and p.s., the reason I haven't posted sooner has been due to my vacation and lack of a scanner.)

Iron Man Practice
This is an Iron Man painting I made referencing a painting by concept artist Xia Taptara. I included some process pictures as well, because I figured it could give some insight into how I worked on the painting, along with, hopefully, revealing some flaws in my process so I can learn from them. (Approximately 2.5 hours in GIMP)
Grey-Scale with Reference...
I am trying to learn to paint while I have free time these days and this is one of my attempts at "furthering my education". It's a work in progress that I probably will never finish, since it's purpose was to help me learn some techniques and what not. I still have a long way to go, but at least I feel like I've learned something after this!

Japanese Genesis

This is my attempt at a finished illustration. I was in the middle of preparing for a project in my Japanese class here at the University and I stumbled upon the "Creation of the World" myth from Japan. It certainly peaked my interest at the time, so much so that I felt the urge to put it on a piece of paper. Now, the actual myth is a bit different than what I portrayed, but the overall idea is still present. I wanted to make the man's (Izanagi-no-Mikoto) color scheme more of a darker earth tone to represent his purpose in the illustration, to create the land with his halberd. The woman (Izanami-no-Mikoto), on the other hand, has a lighter more vibrant color scheme to help represent her ability to bring color and life to the land that Izanagi created.
